Dwan Mathis: Ohio State loses quarterback commit to Georgia

Former Iowa State commitment who became former Michigan State commitment Dwan Mathis is now a former Ohio State commit as well.
After flipping from the Spartans to the Buckeyes in June, Mathis announced he will sign with the Georgia Bulldogs on Wednesday at a school press conference in a video from his teammate, 2020 5-star offensive lineman Justin Rogers. Mathis will head to Georgia despite never taking a visit to the school.

The 6-foot-5, 205-pound 4-star prospect from Oak Park (Mich.) had intended to sign with Ohio State and enroll early with the Buckeyes. But as he received word that there may be some academic issues holding up that plan he began to explore other potential options.
The announcement that former 5-star quarterback Justin Fields was transferring from Georgia blew one of those options wide open. Sight unseen, Mathis decided to walk through that door, ending a relationship with the Buckeyes and Ryan Day that began almost two years ago. It was that relationship and trust in Day that prompted the country’s ninth-ranked prostyle quarterback to pick Ohio State over Michigan State in June.

“I was just committed to Michigan State and I wanted to stay loyal to the coaching staff,” Mathis said in June. “But after a while, I thought ‘I don’t want to be the person that didn’t go check out all of my opportunities, and go play for a national championship.’
“Coach Day kept telling me about it and stuff like that, so I wanted to go see it for myself. Then it was everything he said it was going to be. That’s a big thing, too. Really the national championship aspect, me fitting better in their offense than the pro-style, it really wasn’t like how people make it seem, like I just flipped. I had a lot of loyalty to Michigan State, it really wasn’t that easy. But it was best for me.â€
Recruiting is a wild ride, always, and the recruitment of Dwan Mathis is just another prime example of that. As for the Buckeyes, they’ll turn their attention to trying to land a quarterback in 2019 via transfer or graduate transfer. Ohio State has Scottsdale (Ariz.) 4-star 2020 quarterback Jack Miller already verballed in the next cycle.
