Scarlet Sunrise: Mitchell Melton giving reminders he shouldn’t be overlooked

Good morning, Ohio State fans, and welcome to the Scarlet Sunrise. Football will always be our focus, but every day we’ll cover news, notes and analysis from across Buckeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Ohio State football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Mitchell Melton giving reminders he shouldn’t be overlooked

Mitchell Melton was only a three-star prospect when he signed with the Buckeyes out of Maryland. But he’s already showing why he shouldn’t be overlooked in the linebackers room.

Melton lost his black stripe after practice on Tuesday, making him yet another freshman to officially become part of the football program. Linebackers coach Al Washington has liked what he has seen from Melton so far.

“The freshmen coming in, I’m really excited about Cody Simon and Mitchell Melton,” Washington said. “Those kids are going to be special players. They’re both smart. They’re both tough, and they both love football. Very excited about the youth in the program. Those young guys, they just have to have an opportunity to get out there and play. When they get out there, they have to make the impact they know they want to make. Everything leading up to that, they’ve shown they’re capable, so I’m excited.”

Now officially a member of the football program, Melton can continue to offer reminders as to why he shouldn’t be overlooked.

Matt Barnes, Ohio State safeties, specialists meet with media

Ohio State special teams coordinator and safeties coach Matt Barnes, along with safeties Josh Proctor and Marcus Hooker, kicker Blake Haubeil and punter Drue Chrisman, held a press conference to break down the special teams and defense Wednesday morning. All five of them talked about the Buckeyes plans for special teams, the position battle at safety and more.

Tristan Leigh locked in for Buckeyes Bash visit

The Buckeyes can’t host any commitments or targets this fall. But the Ohio State commitments in 2021 are getting together on their own accord for a “Buckeyes Bash,” a gathering of all commits and select targets, a chance for the entire class to get together during this strange year. And they’ll have a special guest on hand next Saturday. From Lettermen Row recruiting expert Birm:

Tristan Leigh has remained a priority for the Buckeyes over the last few months, and he’s been working hard to get himself to the campuses of the schools he’s still interested in — including a visit to Oklahoma and a pair of trips to LSU. Now he’s coming to Ohio State, a family decision that Leigh’s mother, Laura, confirmed to Lettermen Row.
