Davon Hamilton impacting Ohio State defensive line
As Chase Young finds himself climbing Heisman polls, the rest of the defensive line is proving it can be dominant at all four spots.
Davon Hamilton is just one example of that, and the senior defensive tackle is finding a nice role in the defensive line rotation. Oh, and he’s blowing up offensive lines in the middle of a stout run defense. All his production has been noticed since winter and summer workouts.
“I thought he had one of the best off-seasons of anybody in the program,” coach Ryan Day said. “He really took a step in this off-season in the weight room with Coach Jay, just in general, and you could see him coming. Again, he started to get a voice. He’s been in front of the team. And that’s not easy for Davon. But I’m really proud of the way he’s playing.”
If the interior defensive linemen can keep producing while Chase Young grabs attention, Ohio State’s defensive front will be among the best in the country. And it starts in the middle with Davon Hamilton and Robert Landers, among others.
Latest BuckIQ breaks down Jashon Cornell
Make no mistake, Chase Young deserves all the attention he gets. But the rest of the defensive line is good, and there isn’t a spot on the field defensive line coach Larry Johnson loves more than the three-technique spot. Jashon Cornell is quietly thriving in that role, and he’s having a huge impact on the Ohio State defensive line.
What has allowed Cornell to close his career at such a high level? Where can the versatile defensive tackle still find more ways to contribute down the stretch? Why does Ohio State love the three-technique position so much? Former Buckeyes defensive tackle Tracy Sprinkle was back in the Lettermen Row film lab with senior writer Austin Ward breaking down Cornell’s play so far and trying to answer those questions on the latest episode of BuckIQ.
