Scarlet Sunrise: Ohio State still looking good for 4-star DE Darrion Henry

Good morning, Ohio State fans, and welcome to the Scarlet Sunrise! Football will always be our focus, but every day we’ll cover news, notes and analysis from across Buckeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Ohio State football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Darrion Henry commitment coming?

Cincinnati Princeton 4-star defensive lineman Darrion Henry, the country’s third-ranked strongside defensive end and Ohio’s second-ranked prospect behind future Vikings teammate Paris Johnson, announced on Twitter recently that he could end his college recruitment sooner than expected.

The key question, obviously, is how much sooner he’s talking — especially since he’d never hinted at a commitment timeline previously. Sooner could mean “one week from now,” but it could also mean “before December.” For any Ohio State fans worrying about the timing of the tweet, given that Henry recently visited LSU, have no fear. As Lettermen Row recruiting czar Birm notes, the Buckeyes have 100-percent of the crystal ball selections for Henry, and espite the push from LSU — for him, Johnson and Jaheim Thomas — it’d still be a major upset if his eventual commitment is given anywhere other than Ohio State.

Ryan Day killing it with HS coaches

If you didn’t catch it over the weekend, make time for this story from Lettermen Row contributor John Brice, who spoke to high school coaches about Ryan Day. In his first few months on the job as Ohio State’s head coach, Day has already made quite the impression on some pretty important people in the recruiting world.

“You never want to follow a situation where someone was that successful [as Urban Meyer] and there’s nothing negative to say [about transition], but he’s done a nice job,” said Norwalk coach Todd Fox, who coaches Ohio State commit Trey Leroux. “Coach Day, he himself will contact coaches like myself, check on recruits. Not being an Ohio person originally, he’s making sure he’s covering his bases.

“I know the coaches association is really happy for his connection. For Coach Meyer, it was kind of natural, but for Coach Day he’s continuing that and is maybe more intentional.”

There are some great quotes in there from coaches from across the state of Ohio, so be sure to check it out.

Ohio State impresses Joseph Johnson

A quick-rising cornerback prospect made his first Ohio State visit over the weekend.

Colonial Heights (Va.) Life Christian Academy standout Joseph Johnson, a 3-star defensive back, recently decommitted from North Carolina State. Johnson has been in regular contact with the Ohio State coaching staff in the last few weeks and is quickly growing a tight-knit bond with a pair of Buckeyes assistants.

“Jeff Hafley and Matt Barnes are both really cool,” Johnson said prior to his visit. “I’ve talked with Barnes face-to-face and I really like him. They’re pretty straightforward and I can appreciate that. It’s a great program and they consistently put out talent at my position.”

His visit appears to have gone well, and it sounds like this won’t be the last time Johnson makes the trip to Columbus.

“Ohio State was great,” he told Lettermen Row. “I loved my visit. I definitely learned more about the defense and how I fit. I plan to return this summer.”

Ohio State softball eliminated

Ohio State softball’s season came to an end over the weekend, as the Buckeyes were knocked out of the Knoxville Regional after advancing to the winner’s bracket with an opening-round win. The Buckeyes began play with a 1-0 win against North Carolina, pitting them against No. 12 national seed Tennessee in their next contest. Ohio State faltered from there, however, losing 12-4 to Tennessee to set up an elimination rematch against North Carolina. The Tar Heels took a measure of revenge in that one, winning 5-3 to end Ohio State’s season.
