Scarlet Sunrise: What can Justin Fields bring to Ohio State’s offense?

Good morning, Ohio State fans, and welcome to the Scarlet Sunrise! Football will always be our focus, but every day we’ll cover news, notes and analysis from across Buckeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Ohio State football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Cardale Jones on Justin Fields

Transfer quarterback Justin Fields appears likely to be next in line to take over Ohio State’s high-scoring offense from his buddy Dwayne Haskins, who uses the same quarterback trainer . And while he’ll have to learn a new offense and compete for the starting job with Matthew Baldwin in spring practice, the move from Georgia to Ohio State by Fields has so far been one of the most significant in all of college football this offseason.

What does it mean for the Buckeyes? Former Ohio State star and national championship-winning quarterback Cardale Jones was in the Lettermen Row film lab to break down Justin Fields for his first episode of BuckIQ, looking at his extended work against UMass to get an idea of the tools he brings to the offense.

Ben Christman gets Ohio State offer

Ohio State dipped back into the 2021 pool on Thursday, issuing an offer to Richfield (Ohio) Revere offensive tackle Ben Christman. The 6-foot-6, 300-pound sophomore is already drawing big attention and is seen by some recruiting experts as a star in the making who could be the state’s best offensive line prospect in his class.

The offer from the Buckeyes is sixth for the star lineman and his second from a team inside the Big Ten after Penn State offered in late January. The recruiting game is just getting started for Christman, so he wasn’t considering a quick commitment — but is thrilled to hear what Ohio State is sharing with him.

“It feels surreal to be considered a top prospect by the Buckeyes,” he said. “They said nice things about my future and how excited they are to try and make me a Buckeye. They said I am one the top guys they’re going for. I’m just excited to receive this offer.”

How did the Buckeyes survive and what does it mean? Senior writer Austin Ward broke down the close call in his Three Points post.
