Scarlet Sunrise: Jaylan Knighton picks Florida State over Ohio State

Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Ohio State football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Jaylan Knighton picks Florida State

Ohio State seemed to be set when it came to recruiting running backs, as Tony Alford and Ryan Day were ready to welcome a pair of big-time backs to Ohio State’s 2019 recruiting class.

But after a turn of events over the weekend, the Buckeyes are in a strange place: on the outside looking in. That became official Tuesday evening when Dearfield Beach (Fla.) 4-star running back Jaylan Knighton chose Florida State over the Buckeyes. Knighton visited Florida State over the weekend, and Ohio State seemed to know it was coming. That didn’t make it an easier pill to swallow.

Stick with recruiting guru Birm to catch up on who the Buckeyes might target at running back now.

New episode of the Tim May Podcast

Matt Dickmann, who coached Justin Fields at Harrison (Ga.) High School, joined the Tim May Podcast to discuss former Harrison and current Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. Dickmann explained why he believes Fields can excell for the Buckeyes.

Lettermen Row senior writer Austin Ward also joined the show to break down Ohio State as the Buckeyes get set to open fall camp Friday.

In-state linebacker taking recruiting slow

Reid Carrico, the No. 4 player in Ohio and the nation’s No. 3 inside linebacker in the class of 2021, isn’t rushing into a commitment, whether it will be to Ohio State or another national power.

The 4-star junior from Ironton took visits to Clemson and Tennessee over the weekend, and he has no plans of committing anytime in the near future. Coach Al Washington and Ohio State’s staff can begin contacting players from the 2021 class on Sept. 1, so things will be heating up soon for Carrico.

Counting down

  • First day of training camp: 2 days
  • Ohio State vs. Florida Atlantic (season opener): 32 days
  • Ohio State vs. Michigan: 123 days
