Scarlet Sunrise: Ryan Day wants Horseshoe loud, packed early Saturday

Good morning, Ohio State fans, and welcome to the Scarlet Sunrise. Football will always be our focus, but every day we’ll cover news, notes and analysis from across Buckeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Ohio State football, recruiting, basketball and more.

Buckeyes expecting loud, packed Horseshoe

Noon games might not be the favorite kickoff time among fans, but that’s when the Buckeyes will host Penn State in Ohio Stadium on Saturday. The complaints about noon games lacking atmosphere should be put to bed, because ESPN, FOX and Big Ten Network will all be hosting pregame shows from Columbus in the buildup to the game of the year in the conference.

For those heading into Ohio Stadium for the game, Ohio State coach Ryan Day delivered a message Tuesday.

“Anything we can do to be as loud as possible,” Day said. “That will make it harder for them. This is an opportunity to go out and send our seniors out the right way as their last time playing in the Horseshoe. I know that means a lot to everybody in Buckeye Nation and it’s going to mean a lot to our team to see everybody out there loud and ready to roll at noon.”

The traffic situation might not be the best, due to the large influx of people, so fans are advised to get there early. And just remember, Day wants the stadium packed and loud, even though the noon games aren’t the favorite among the fan base.

Chase Young still finalist for Nagurski Award

Although he missed two weeks due to a suspension handed down by the NCAA, Ohio State superstar defensive end Chase Young has still been named a finalist for the Nagurski Award, given to the nation’s top defensive player.

Young is trying to become the second Buckeye to win the award. James Laurinaitis won it as a linebacker in 2006. If Young does to Penn State and Michigan what he did to Wisconsin, he should win the award easily.

K.J. Hill closing in on Ohio State records

K.J. Hill is chasing records for Ohio State.

He is close to breaking the record for most catches in an Ohio State career, and he’s on pace to break the record before the season is over. The fifth-year senior needs just 10 catches to break the record. Oh, and he has caught a pass in 44 straight games, close to being a record for the Buckeyes, too.

As his senior day in Ohio Stadium approaches, Hill’s main goal is winning a national title. But the personal goals could be coming regardless.

What has made Hill one of the most productive wide receivers in Ohio State history? How does his game allow him to thrive in the passing attack for the Buckeyes? Former Ohio State wide receiver and national champion Evan Spencer and Lettermen Row senior writer Austin Ward put the film on from Hill’s most recent outing and try to answer those questions in the latest episode of BuckIQ.

Impressive OL guest list lined up for Penn State game

The Buckeyes are likely done recruiting offensive linemen in the 2020 class, and most of their 2020 commits will be in town for the game against Penn State on Saturday. With the latest class being nearly finalized, the Buckeyes are getting started on recruiting offensive linemen in the 2021 class. The latest from Birm:

The class of 2020 is pretty well settled, so that’s more of a bonding opportunity for them rather than a recruiting moment. That group can certainly help Ben Christman and his efforts to get 2021 standouts to join him in the commitment column, though, and there will be a number of major junior prospects in attendance with an offer and Ohio State interest. Here’s a rundown of the guys Lettermen Row knows will be coming.

  • 4-Star Ben Christman

  • 4-Star Trey Zuhn, Colorado

  • 4-star J.C. Latham, Florida

  • 4-star Rayshaun Benny, Michigan

  • 4-star Rocco Spindler, Michigan

  • 4-star Donovan Jackson, Texas

  • 4-star Jager Burton, Kentucky

  • 4-star Tristan Leigh, Virginia

It should be a huge weekend for the Buckeyes on the recruiting trail, and the offensive line effort is no exception.

Hope Coach Day gets his request for a loud stadium but doubt the socialites attending will exert the effort.

It’s almost at the point where the there needs to be a noise tutorial video on the “jumbo tron” before the game starts. The crowd is too quiet on 1st & 2nd down when the away team has the ball, and it should be louder on 3rd down as well. The crowd is way too loud when Ohio State goes for it on 4th down. This is basic stuff. Also, kick the old people out who don’t make noise and add more drunken loud college students.
