Buckeyes gain ground in polls during wild week

COLUMBUS — The wait is almost over for Ohio State.

The Buckeyes have had to watch other college football teams play football for six weeks, and they’ll only have to sit by and watch for one more week. Ohio State kicks off in less than two weeks, and it still is being left off some ballots until the Big Ten kicks off.

Until then, the Buckeyes are lower than they should be. Ohio State checked in at No. 5 in the latest Amway Coaches Poll on Sunday afternoon, receiving two first-place votes. Clemson retained the top spot in the poll after its top-10 win. The Tigers were followed by Alabama, Georgia, Notre Dame and Ohio State.

Some coaches and voters in the AP Poll continue to only rank teams that have played a game this fall, so some will keep the Buckeyes and other Big Ten teams off their ballots until the Oct. 25 polls are released, skewing the results and rankings in the polls. Once the Buckeyes kick off on Oct. 24, they should be back into the top three or four with Alabama, Clemson and others, assuming the Crimson Tide and Tigers remain undefeated.

Ohio State certainly doesn’t care where its ranked at any point in the season, especially before it even starts, and the polls don’t truly matter this early in the season anway. But as long as polls keep coming out, the Buckeyes will at least crack the top 10.

The full poll can be found below.
