Buckeyes return to small-group workouts ahead of spring camp

COLUMBUS — The Woody Hayes Athletic Center is back open for business at Ohio State.

The Buckeyes still don’t have the full team back together. But after initially expecting to pause all activities for the program for seven days starting on Tuesday, additional testing since then indicated it was safe to allow players and coaches back into the indoor facility for workouts in small-group settings.

Ohio State never anticipated a change to the spring camp schedule, which begins next Friday. But now it remains fully on track to begin the first of 15 workouts leading up to the spring game in the Horseshoe next month.

“Based on multiple negative tests with players this week, we determined players could return and work out socially distanced and safely in small groups,” Ohio State spokesman Jerry Emig said.

The Buckeyes decided to close down those workouts earlier in the week due to a rise in positive PCR tests on Monday, electing to err on the side of caution near the end of offseason conditioning and before what will be a critical spring for Ryan Day and his program.

Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith and team physician Dr. Jim Borchers made the decision together on Tuesday, although it was always subject to change depending on the data — either bringing the players back safely or potentially extending the quarantine.

“Our decisions on the welfare of our student-athletes, staff members and those coming to our campus, and our determination as to when we will reopen and resume activities, will continue to be guided by our medical staff,” Smith said on Tuesday. “We have been successful in safely hosting nearly 100 athletic events on campus this year with limited disruptions, but this pandemic is not over.

“We will continue to stress the safety measures of wearing masks, consistent and thorough hand washing and physical distancing and we will remain vigilant in those areas.”

The next step back to full team activities is underway for Ohio State.

The Woody is open once again.

Lettermen Row will continue to update this story as more information becomes available for Ohio State ahead of spring practice.
