Question Of The Day

Lost Buckeyes season for Brendon White still puzzling, surprising

The speculation, debate and conversations about Ohio State never end, and Lettermen Row is always ready to dive into the discussions. All week long, senior writer Austin Ward will field topics about the Buckeyes submitted by readers and break down anything that’s on the minds of the Best Damn Fans in the Land. Have a question that needs to be tackled, like the one today about Ohio State and Brendon White? Send it in right here — and check back daily for the answers.

The door doesn’t appear to be closed on Brendon White, but at this point it’s hard to see him walking back through it for Ohio State.

A season that started with enormous expectations for the Rose Bowl MVP on defense as he transitioned to a new role that seemed to be tailor-made for his athleticism might have come to an end with White at home last weekend, not included on the Buckeyes travel list and facing an uncertain future. The junior hadn’t played much anyway this season and Ohio State has obviously been plenty dangerous without him, but that didn’t make his absence in Indianapolis last week any less shocking.

Considering how high the stock was for White on New Year’s Day, it would have been hard to imagine it would dip so low that he wouldn’t even be in uniform last weekend with coach Ryan Day calling him “unavailable for personal reasons.” But this kind of situation doesn’t typically just happen overnight. And the frustration for White has been clear and understandable throughout the season as he’s struggled with the transition to the Bullet position that was supposed to help make him a star for the Buckeyes after his breakout performances last year at safety.

Right from the opener, though, Pete Werner established that he was clearly ahead of White in the pecking order thanks to his ability to handle the role’s linebacker responsibilities while also showing an ability to drop into coverage like a defensive back. And while the two were considered interchangeable at one point, White never truly got to the level where he could consistently be in the rotation, though he still finished the regular season with 19 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, a sack and a pass broken up.

“It’s definitely frustrating some times, but at the end of the day, you have to know why you’re here,” White said early in the season. “Whether I need to play or if I’m not playing, I’m still here to help my brothers win games and be there for them. … If I’m worried about not playing, then I’m being selfish and not caring about the team and putting the team first.

“At the end of the day, if I’m playing a lot or if I’m not playing at all, I just want to get the win. That’s all that matters to me.”

The Buckeyes obviously never dropped a game, but it’s still unclear at this point if White will be around to contribute in some capacity for the next one as the program prepares for the College Football Playoff.

At this point, his name has not appeared in the transfer portal. And Day indicated that there would be a discussion this week to potentially resolve the situation and provide clarity moving forward.

“I don’t know [his Fiesta Bowl status], we’ll kind of get that figured out this week,” Day said. “We’ll sit down, have a conversation, kind of go from there. But I don’t really have an update right now.”

There’s no point in guessing until both Brendon White and Ohio State clear the air and make up their minds about the future. But the fact that the situation even reached this point in the first place remains one of the most puzzling storylines of the season for the Buckeyes.

Thanks for the update and your restraint on White, Austin.

i’m still surprised at how things ended up with brian snead – when i saw that kids HS highlights – i thought he a was a can’t-miss superstar coming to osu.

You do know he got dismissed from the team, right? It was hush-hush for a while then someone from The Lantern broke the story later. It did not have anything to do with his playing ability. It was multiple things he did “off the field” that lead to his demise and dismissal. Google it and you will find it. He is at a JUCO now. He would have seen meaningful minutes this year; for sure; had the above not happened.

Sure tackler, especially in the open field. If there’s not room for him at his natural position at safety, it would seem wise to move on. In today’s game, linebackers that can cover are a necessity and power five programs have to have them to compete; which seemingly makes the bullet position redundant.

So, there is room for White. Werner and Borland are molasses slow. We did not play anyone all season. Clemson will show you how average Werner is. America’s College golden boy, but we all the truth here. He won’t make the league and is just a Mattison, Day, and Hafley fake prodigy for some strange reason.. 100 Anyone know why?

Ypu have to be a Clemson fan with that stupidity.

I’m from Ohio and a D1 athlete which you are not. White is better than Werner. He just does not have that coach connection (you know what I mean here). Do your research, and get a GED. Stupidity does not equal grad degree from Law School. So Werner is a top notch player in your opinion? Laughable, average Joe at best. You obviously have no inclination to statistical analysis

I made no reference to any other player, and tooted no one’s horn but B. White’s. I simply said that if there’s not room for him on the field at OSU, it seems sensible that a guy with his ability should move elsewhere.
As for the GED, I am an OSU alum, and concerning D1 athletics, I could have played baseball and run distance at a number of schools but chose to attend OSU(out of state) for academic reasons.

Point well taken, I do concur. My apologies.

All I know is Werner bounces off ball carriers and is out of position on critical coverage plays, it’s maddening why we don’t see White out there, to be honest I think he’d be a better backer than Werner too.

Good player on bad team last year. Average player on great team this year. Case closed.

NFL player in the future, better than Werner who is slow and easy to go around. Werner is average, not NLF material, White is a natural athlete. Case closed. Bad team? Really?
Watch Werner against Clemson. Average Joe LB. Again, case closed.

Based on what I saw from White last year,it’s difficult to believe that Werner is a better option in coverage. White also offers a superb pass rusher when they want to blitz that Werner doesn’t offer.

A certain travesty. The kid had 13 tackles in one half last season against Nebraska and has done everything the coaching staff has asked. Averaged like 6 tackles for half a season. Mind boggling the politics coaches can play with an athlete’s future. It would be one thing if he did not earn playing time, but that is not the case. I saw what Wisconsin and Penn State did against Werner and White could not do any worse. Bullet position and all other reasons are a smoke screen to cover up this conspiracy. How else can he not be on the field? Shame on OSU. The truth will come out and one day White will be in the NFL and I find it highly unlikely he will be saying THE OSU anything! I don’t blame him. The shadiness continues…. 100

Day said it was personal reasons
It had nothing to do with ability. Do you have some inside info?

Yes, Mattison is clueless and I am sure if one does enough research, they will probably find out the truth behind Werner’s obscure rise to prominence and White’s reversal of fortune. Let me clear: The answer is not Werner is better, plays better, and practices better, I can tell you that much ! 100! No one wants to hear the truth actually!

I think personal reasons means something to the effect of “he’s taking time to decide if this is the right place for him” not that he’s being disciplined in any way….just my two cents.

Brendon White’s father is William White, a former OSU DB in the late 1980s and a 12-year NFL player. Mr. White was diagnosed last year with ALS. So very sad. Brendon may need to be at home for awhile. That’s why it is “personal” per Coach Day. Pray for Mr. White and for Brendon. He is a great player and is missed. Bucks could certainly use his help against both Clemson and ??.

I think white would be needed against clemson.

The few times I saw him play he took horrible angles to the ball and missed tackles. Osu has better film than tv, but if that’s any indication of how he played all year, including practice, it’s no wonder that he isn’t playing. They haven’t missed a beat without him, if he moves on, they won’t miss him next year either. If he stays and works at it, he may contribute next year, with all the secondary players expected to leave.

Huh? What games are you watchin bro? Werner gets shook more than a set of dice. He can’t even cover his own shadow. He is an average player on a great defense. His lack of speed is overshadowed by the superior players around him. As far as Brendon White, you don’t get 55 tackles in a half season by taking bad angles. Again, this is a conspiracy and has nothing to do with his playing ability. Clemson will focus on Werner, the weak link. You will be rooting for White in the NFL though, that’s what is funny…

AZ Border B

This is the last thing I am going to say because the lack of knowledge on this comment board is repulsive and White deserves better. Let me be clear so no one was is confused, this young man will be a star without the help of OSU. If someone gave him an opportunity to play almost every down for an entire season like (Borland/Werner), he would blow up like Hiroshima and lead the team in tackles. FACTS and the haters can’t stand it. I’m out to Nogales Sonora to politic over some Cazadores and carne asada.

Bro stop acting like you know better than the coaching staff. If White gave us a better chance at winning games he would be in there. Werner has been fantastic covering TEs this year. Is White faster than Werner and Borland? Sure. Has it been a disappointing year for White? Absolutely. Our defense is top 5 in every major category. There is no conspiracy.

WOW, Law Degree and D1 player. You really are delusional. Your too stupid to know that your responses on here disqualify both of those. Go back to your playstation imaginary world and let the grown ups discuss here

I have never even owned a game console. Again stats don’t lie. Yes, D1 athlete, full scholarship. Are you an athlete at all? Do you know what Sports Law even means? Matter of fact, I cannot even continue this dialogue with such cluelessness. Back to the topic, Brendon White deserves to play, bottom line. (Read again) Disqualifies my accomplishments? Baseless, no foundation to what you are saying, now you just sound plain dumb. My correspondence speaks for itself based on the feedback my friend. Have an inspiring day.

You can’t continue because you can’t keep up with your lies. What isn’t a lie is Werner was honorable mention BIG player from people that know and praise from Klatt, Perry, 11 warriors staff and on here. So your speak is plain shit and you know it.

AZ Border B

Lies, who was MVP of the Rpse Bowl? Werner is Average Joe. Honorable mention my ass. Just wait, like I said, you make no sense, what lie did I tell idiot? Brendon White got screwed. The coaches have a personal interest in making sure Werner gets playing time. Let me know when someone supports what you are saying, not seeing it here so..
Werner plays good against inferior opponents. Oh and stop sweating me, this is my last response, since you keep mentioning moms, I think you know I’m busy.

Yet another flat earther conspiracy child. This staff has turned this defense from average at best to one of the top defenses in the country yet you know better than them. You are a troll and liar. There isn’t one on here that believes anything you say because troll bleeds through everything. You are too stupid to realize how stupid you sound with trying to build yourself up because you lack in every department. There is help out there for your lack of self esteem. Although it’s quite entertaining observing some of the things you’ve come up with. Next time try a degree from Harvard and your running for president.
