Ohio State football recruiting can be a wild ride full of twists and turns as recruits from all over the country maneuver their way to signing day. Lettermen Row is here to help navigate the tumultuous roads by getting to the heart of the matter with the young football players and Ohio State coaches and staff members themselves. This week’s guest is 2021 linebacker prospect Raejson Davis, one of two primary targets still remaining for the Buckeyes in the current recruiting cycle.
When he visited Ohio State in March, Raesjon Davis was firmly committed to LSU.
Still, that visit — a brief two-hour stop on a college tour he was making with dozens of other prospects from the West Coast — left an impression on the country’s No. 4-ranked outside linebacker.
That trip also gave him his first, and only, opportunity to meet Buckeyes linebackers coach Al Washington and head coach Ryan Day, each of whom also made a big impression on the 6-foot-1, 215-pound star from Santa Ana. (Calif.) Mater Dei High School.
So. as Raesjon Davis began to wonder about other college options over the last few months due to coaching changes at LSU, it was no surprise that Ohio State was linked to him as a possible landing spot. The Buckeyes have only one linebacker committed in the Class of 2021 and Davis is one of just a handful of players the Ohio State coaching staff is still actively recruiting in this cycle. That relationship between the two sides has grown exponentially over the last few months but, like all the bonds being built in this awkward year, it’s been done almost entirely in a virtual setting.
Davis had planned to get back to Columbus in December but that visit fell through as the Ohio State game against Michigan was cancelled. Now, he says he and his family are working — and hoping — to make a stop in Columbus over the next few weeks because his parents haven’t had a chance to see what the Buckeyes home town is all about.
Does that visit have to happen for Ohio State to have any chance to sign Davis in February? Why did he decide against early enrollment and what Buckeyes linebacker role does he see himself playing if he ends up with the Buckeyes? Raesjon Davis joined Birminology to talk about his process, his relationships and more with Lettermen Row.
