Scarlet Sunrise: 5-star Ohio State target Zach Harrison delays commitment
Good morning, Ohio State fans, and welcome to the Scarlet Sunrise! Football will always be our focus, but every day we’ll cover news, notes and analysis from across Buckeyes sports. Join us each morning to get caught up on everything you missed in the world of Ohio State football, recruiting, basketball and more.
Zach Harrison pushes back decision
The most anticipated Ohio State recruiting decision of the Class of 2019 won’t come when originally planned. Olentangy (Ohio) Orange 5-star defensive end Zach Harrison told ABC6 that he won’t adhere to his original plan to commit sometime before his Aug. 14 birthday.
Harrison is down to Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State and has already taken official visits to all three programs. However, it doesn’t appear any team has been able to gain separation on the others.
“I want to go to all three schools very badly,” he told ABC6.
Joshua Perry announces retirement
Former Ohio State linebacker Joshua Perry announced his retirement from the NFL on Monday afternoon. Perry attributed his decision in part to the amount of concussions he’s sustained during his career.
“Effective immediately, I am officially retiring from professional football,” Perry said. “Football has been one of the biggest blessings of my life, but recent concerns about concussions and the health of my brain have led me to step away from the game.
“I’ve recently sustained my 6th documented concussion. It wasn’t from a high velocity, big contact play. It was a very pedestrian thing, and that was a huge concern to me. The last thing I want to do is put the health of my brain and my future wellbeing in jeopardy over a game and a paycheck.”
Ohio State impresses 2020 5-star
Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei 5-star cornerback Elias Ricks, the country’s No. 2-ranked cornerback in the Class of 2020, came away pleasantly surprised by his recent visit to Columbus.
“It went better than I thought, and right now it’s Ohio State and USC in the lead,” he said. “I thought it would be different. Urban Meyer is such a down-to-earth guy. He made me feel comfortable there, they made it feel like home. I definitely plan on going back there and using an official visit to Ohio State.”
