Ohio State target Geirean Hatchett assesses top recruiting options, relationships

Ohio State football recruiting can be a wild ride full of twists and turns as recruits from all over the country maneuver their way to signing day. Lettermen Row is here to help you navigate the tumultuous roads by getting to the heart of the matter with the young football players themselves. Birminology shows who the young men being recruited by Ohio State truly are — by talking to them. Today’s guest: 4-star offensive lineman Geirean Hatchett who recently included Ohio State in his final five schools.

When Geirean Hatchett first visited Ohio State in the summer of 2018, he did so believing that Urban Meyer, the centerpiece of that late July visit, would be the guy recruiting him for the long haul.

“Getting to sit and talk with Coach Meyer for the first time was really cool,” Hatchett said last July. “Just getting to hear everything he had to say to me was awesome. We definitely built a good relationship with him while I was here.”

Just days later, Meyer was on administrative leave and his future was up in the air. But Ohio State never stopped chasing the country’s 10th-ranked offensive guard. Hatchett made his second visit to Ohio State in late November and grew his relationship with offensive line coach Greg Studrawa and Meyer.

“I have a mental checklist that a school has to check off all the boxes on,” he said then. “Ohio State has to be able to check off all of those boxes for me before I take the next step. At this point, I haven’t found anything that’s missing from my checklist. I definitely still have to think about it a lot and see if it is the right fit for me, just like every other school.”

A week after that visit, Meyer retired and there was another opportunity for Hatchett to move on from the Buckeyes. But once again, he didn’t.  Now, with Ohio State in his final five schools, Hatchett is continuing to work on his relationships with the staff members that are still in Columbus.

How has Ryan Day helped bridge the gap? What else is important to Hatchett? Find out the answer to those questions and more in the latest episode of Birminology on Lettermen Row.
