Lejond Cavazos sees national titles in his Ohio State future

Ohio State football recruiting can be a wild ride full of twists and turns as recruits from all over the country maneuver their way to signing day. Lettermen Row is here to help navigate the tumultuous roads by getting to the heart of the matter with the young football players themselves. Birminology shows who the young men being recruited by Ohio State truly are — by talking to them. Today’s guest is Ohio State commitment Lejond Cavazos, a 2020 verbal who will enroll with the Buckeyes in January.

It’s been a wild ride for IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) 4-star cornerback Lejond Cavazos.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound cornerback committed early to Ohio State and then when Urban Meyer announced his retirement a year ago, he reopened his recruitment.

Sort of. Cavazos knew all along that he wanted to suit up for the Buckeyes, but the jarring, emotional shock of Meyer’s departure hit him and his family hard. His father, C.J., was a long-time friend of Meyer and the Cavazos family wanted to be sure that Ryan Day was capable of maintaining Ohio State’s spot among the country’s elite football programs.

Day and his coaching staff have proven that — and quickly — with co-defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley leading the way in the recruitment of Cavazos. Along the way, the talented defensive back has made a number of friends and formed close-knit relationships in the Buckeyes class, with none being closer than 5-star wide receiver Julian Fleming.

In just about a month, Cavazos, Fleming and almost a dozen more 2020 commitments will embark on their shared journey to Ohio State when they enroll early with the Buckeyes.

How does Ohio State feel about Cavazos and his development at cornerback? What value has there been in taking multiple trips to visit the Buckeyes this season? Where does Cavazos see the Ohio State program going from here? Find out the answers to those things and more in this week’s edition of Birminology on Lettermen Row.

Birm do you think he was just being coy about mentioning potential final recruits? He has been one of our best recruiters.
