COLUMBUS — After almost four years of recruiting Derrick Davis, the big day is coming for Ohio State and Penn State.
The country’s No. 2-ranked safety will make his college decision on Saturday, and when he does, it will bring to an end one of the more interesting recruitments of the 2021 recruiting cycle.
For months it appeared that Ohio State was on the outside looking in for Davis, victimized by its own success recruiting defensive backs since Kerry Coombs and Matt Barnes ahave six future members of the secondary already verballed. But the concern about the numbers may not have been just an issue for the player, because from the Buckeyes perspective there is not a huge need for a seventh defensive back even if the talent Davis provides is something they’d love to have.
Basically, for Ohio State, it seems Derrick Davis could be a luxury — a very highly-ranked one. Meanwhile, he seems to be a much bigger need for Penn State. The Nittany Lions have only three players ranked inside the top 30 of Pennsylvania prospects committed, and none of them are top-10 in-state talents, a stunning development after years of being a real thorn in the side of the Buckeyes on the recruiting trail.
Will Ohio State pull off the upset? Can LSU, where Davis visited last weekend, come in and swoop him away?
This week’s Talking Stuff: The Ohio State Recruiting Podcast breaks down the Derrick Davis recruitment and gives a final prediction on his ultimate decision. And it also takes a deeper dive into the addition of 2022 tight end Benji Gosnell, who committed to Ohio State on Wednesday night.
