Jahvaree Ritzie connecting with Ohio State despite unusual circumstance

Ohio State football recruiting can be a wild ride full of twists and turns as recruits from all over the country maneuver their way to signing day. Lettermen Row is here to help navigate the tumultuous roads by getting to the heart of the matter with the young football players themselves. Birminology shows who the young men being recruited by Ohio State truly are — by talking to them. Today’s guest is 4-star defensive end Jahvaree Ritzie, a talented defensive lineman from North Carolina.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: The video interview attached was filmed prior to the NCAA imposting a recruiting dead period over concerns around Covid-19, so Ritzie’s plans for a visit changed following recording.)

Mid-April was going to be a big important in the recruitment of Jahvaree Ritzie, the country’s No. 14-ranked strongside defensive end.

That was going to be the first trip to Columbus for the 6-foot-5, 270-pound lineman and his first opportunity to get a real look at what Ohio State is all about. Ritzie isn’t an often-discussed name when it comes to Buckeyes recruiting for the Class of 2021. But his athleticism, build and character makes him exactly the kind of defensive end that Larry Johnson is searching for to join the Rushmen.

Unfortunately for Ritzie, the coronavirus pandemic and the response to it led to all college recruiting visits being put on hold. He’s no longer aware of when he’ll visit Ohio State, but since the announcement that was made two weeks ago there’s been no slowdown in the amount of conversation between he and the Buckeyes.

“They have been staying in touch,” Ritzie told Lettermen Row. “Every day. Those are my guys. The relationship is growing every day.

“I mean it was disappointing to have the visits canceled, but at the same time we must stay safe. That’s what really matters right now.”

Continuing the grow the bonds that sparked Ritzie’s initial interest in Ohio State is vital now for the Buckeyes coaching staff and the 4-star prospect from Glenn High School in Winston-Salem.

What impact has Larry Johnson had on Jahvaree Ritzie to this point? How often is he talking to Ryan Day? What kind of defensive role does he seem himself playing in the future? Find out those answers and more in the latest edition of Birminology on Lettermen Row.
