Ohio State: 4-star linebacker Tommy Eichenberg commits to Buckeyes

There’s never a boring day when around Ohio State football. Just hours before Urban Meyer announced his intention to retire as the Buckeyes football coach, Cleveland St. Ignatius linebacker Tommy Eichenberg was committing to Ohio State, the school he grew up dreaming of playing for.

Now, a little more than two days after Meyer’s announcement and press conference, the 6-foot-4 and 235-pound 4-star linebacker has made his intention public as well.

The country’s 19th-ranked inside linebacker and Ohio’s eighth-ranked prospect, Eichenberg is a former Boston College verbal who had his recruiting “star” rise quickly in the last few months following offers from Ohio State and Michigan. He visited the Buckeyes for the home game on Nov. 24 against the Wolverines, days after re-opening his recruitment, and though he’s remained silent about the trip, it became clear that his lifelong dream of suiting for Ohio State wasn’t going to be passed up.

Deciding to commit — publicly — the day after Urban Meyer retires though is a solid sign as to why Eichenberg picked the Buckeyes. He’s a physical, gritty, run-stuffing linebacker that just fits Ohio State perfectly.

Chuck Kyle, the legendary high school coach at St. Ignatius, raved about Eichenberg following his commitment to Boston College in the summer.

“They love the way he plays linebacker, but they have a position that is a guy who’s a drop end, but also an outside ‘backer,” Kyle told IgnatiusWildcats.com. “At times, he’ll put his hand down and rush, other times he’s dropping off. Tom Eichenberg is perfect for that position, and not everyone can play that position.”

Eichenberg becomes Ohio State’s 16th commitment in the Class of 2019 and second in-state linebacker to join the Buckeyes class, joining fellow Northeast Ohio star Cade Stover of Lexington High School. Fort Wayne (Ind.) Wayne 3-star prospect Craig Young could also play linebacker and the Buckeyes are still working to try and flip Iowa commitment Jestin Jacobs as well, who is expected to make a decision on an official visit with the Buckeyes in the near future.
