Ohio State has landed one of its top targets in the 2019 recruiting class as St. Louis (Mo.) Cardinal Ritter Prep 4-star wide receiver prospect Jameson Williams announced his commitment on Friday.
Williams, 6-foot-2 and a slight 170 pounds, is one of the country’s elite deep-ball threats at wide receiver, averaging more than 30 yards per catch as a junior. There are few players in the country with more scholarship offers than Williams and he chose Ohio State over Bama, UCLA, Oregon, Nebraska and more than 40 other offers. Ohio State’s concerted recruiting efforts paid off here, as the Buckeyes have worked tirelessly to land him over the last few months, starting with former wide receivers coach Zach Smith doing the majority of the heavy lifting but finishing with Brian Hartline in that role.
The courtship between Ohio State and Williams began in August of 2017, when the Buckeyes offered. He visited the school three times over the course of the next 10 months, including his official visit over the weekend of June 22. It was during that visit that Williams and Ohio State really connected, leading to a sense of real confidence that he’d ultimately commit to the Buckeyes.
Lean and fast, Williams is a Missouri prep star on the track as well. He’s a national championship-level sprinter having ripped off a 200m dash time of 21.23 earlier this spring. That kind of speed – and a frame to grow into a true football player’s body – is what makes him such a sought-after prospect. Williams took part in Nike’s premier recruiting event/camp, The Opening, this past July and has remained one of the country’s most sought-after receiving prospects.
Missouri’s second-ranked 2019 prospect becomes Ohio State’s 15th commitment and the second receiver to say yes to the Buckeyes in this cycle. He joins 5-star prospect Garrett Wilson, who has been aggressively working to help secure his commitment.
The addition of Williams moves Ohio State ahead of Penn State and into the No. 2 spot in the Big Ten recruiting rankings for 2019. Ohio State could be done at wide receiver for this cycle, though they’re working hard to land Kentucky’s Wandale Robinson, who they’ll host for an official visit the weekend of Oct. 6.
