Ohio State football recruiting can be a wild ride full of twists and turns as recruits from all over the country maneuver their way to signing day. Lettermen Row is here to help navigate the tumultuous roads by getting to the heart of the matter with the young football players themselves. Birminology shows who the young men being recruited by Ohio State truly are — by talking to them. This week’s guest is 2022 linebacker prospect Gabe Powers, who is a standout sophomore in Ohio.
Ohio State rarely offers in-state football prospects if they’ve not participated in one of the Buckeyes intense one-day summer camps. The odds of that happening go way down when the player in question is only a sophomore and therefore lacks years of varsity football film.
So when Ryan Day and the Buckeyes offered Marysville linebacker Gabe Powers in November, it was a pretty good sign that the 6-foot-4, 215-pound athlete had the potential to be something special on the football field. Michigan had already offered by the time Ohio State did and in recent weeks, as the recruiting calendar reopened to allow contact from colleges, Notre Dame and Penn State are among those who have followed suit. Clemson has been in touch as recently as last week, according to Brent Johnson, the coach at Marysville.
But to this point, there’s been no pressure from Ohio State to quickly finish his recruitment. On the contrary, the Buckeyes are staying patient and staying in touch with Powers as they’re able to according to NCAA rules. Al Washington and Ryan Day have each made trips to Marysville in the last ten days. Though the Ohio State coaches aren’t really able to talk to Powers, their presence speaks volumes about whether or not the Buckeyes are making the young athlete a priority.
There’s no doubt they are. The decision to offer, and prioritize, Powers as early as they have could pay major dividends for Ohio State as it looks for in-state stars to kickstart its 2022 recruiting class.
How is Gabe Powers handling the attention that’s come with so many early recruiting opportunities? How will his family of Buckeyes fans react if he decided to leave the state? What does a normal day of eating look like for a young man trying to gain a lot of weight? The talented defensive prospect answers those questions and more as the latest guest of Birminology, brought to you by Lettermen Row.
