Cameron Martinez: Ohio State commit won’t sign during early period

Ohio State commitment Cameron Martinez has decided he will not sign his Letter of Intent during the early signing period amid concerns about who will eventually be his position coach.

“I talked to Ryan Day on Tuesday morning,” Martinez told Lettermen Row, confirming a report by Rivals.com analyst Josh Helmholdt. “He said it’s fine. And that I can sign in February.”

The decision wasn’t easy for Martinez, who was this season’s Mr. Football in Michigan. But as uncertainty around who will coach him crept up just days before the early signing period, it felt like the right choice for the 5-foot-11, 185-pound two-way athlete from Muskegon. The 4-star athlete told Lettermen Row he’s appreciative of how Day and the Buckeyes have handled the situation.

“It’s been tough this past week with Jeff Hafley leaving, so I just have to think some things through with my family,” he said. “With Hafley’s departure — and he’s someone that I was really close with — I just want to think about this more and hear other schools out and wait to see who Ohio State hires.

“I appreciate him being understanding because he could’ve backed off of me.”

The Buckeyes are not backing off Martinez. They will continue to recruit him through the February signing period and he isn’t backing off of Ohio State, either.

A week ago he had no intention of signing anywhere else or missing this week’s early signing opportunity. Don’t mistake the fact that he’s not signing for not being committed to the Buckeyes. He is just doing his due diligence and making sure the fit will be as good with whomever Day and the Buckeyes bring aboard to coach defensive backs in the future.

“Coach Day made it clear they want me at Ohio State,” he said. “I’m still committed and solid with the Buckeyes. I just need to think things over.”

Ryan Day did not use his in-home visit with Martinez yet since the two-time MLive.com Player of the Year isn’t enrolling early. The plan had always been for the Buckeyes to check in on him in January.

Now, Day will have to do that with a bit more on the line for the Buckeyes with Cameron Martinez.
