Benji Gosnell sorting through top schools, Buckeyes standing out

Ohio State football recruiting can be a wild ride full of twists and turns as recruits from all over the country maneuver their way to signing day. Lettermen Row is here to help navigate the tumultuous roads by getting to the heart of the matter with the young football players and Ohio State coaches and staff members themselves. This week, Benji Gosnell, a top target at tight end in the Class of 2022 for the Buckeyes, joins the program.

For each of the previous two Ohio State recruiting cycles, there’s been a design to sign two tight ends. At least that’s how the plan was draw up originally.

Both times, that approach changed. In 2020, the Buckeyes settled on Joe Royer and have decided to stand pat with Sam Hart as the lone tight end in the Class of 2021.

With Bennett Christian already committed in the Class of 2022, it seems the Buckeyes are serious about taking a pair of tight ends in the next recruiting cycle. They’ve employed Christian to help land their top, complementary target: North Carolina 4-star standout Benji Gosnell.

Ohio State has made the 6-foot-4, 225-pound Gosnell a priority for months, buoyed by the long-term relationship that tight ends coach Kevin Wilson has with Gosnell’s head coach at East Surrey (Pilot Mountain, N.C.) High School, Trent Lowman.

The country’s No. 11-ranked tight end prospect, Gosnell has not yet visited Ohio State. But the Buckeyes have made their way into the upper-crust of his recruitment, finding themselves in a battle with North Carolina and Florida for his eventual services.

Where does Benji Gosnell see is recruitment heading? With a brother playing at North Carolina, how have the Tar Heels benefitted from his proximity to Chapel Hill? How has his huge family impacted the way he’s grown up? Gosnell has answers to things and more in the latest edition of Birminology.
